With so many women in the race this year, I thought it might be nice to make a section in the forum for women's topics. So now that I'm figuring out how this forum works, here is the start of a ladies folder.

W/R/T your Suggestions thread: I was a swimmer in high school and when we'd shave our legs (and just about everything else) towards the end of the season it sure seemed a lot colder when we went outside.  Keep in mind that this was just a short walk to the car and we were usually still wet from the pool.

Also, I'm sure you noticed that in 2007 Sarah Lowell was the only finisher on foot.  One tough cookie.

There is a shelter and outhouse about halfway between the last checkpoint and the finish.  It's rarely mentioned because hardly anyone even pauses there.  For me it's just another sign I'm getting near the finish.

Is anyone interested in getting together sometime Sunday, January 30, in International Falls to meet one another?  I'm interested in knowing who we are, the 15 or so hardy woman who are giving the Arrowhead 135 a go.  Lisa Paulos, foot division, Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Lisa, that sounds great - Jennifer Flynn, bike (most likely) division, Coon Rapids, Minnesota.  Where shall we meet?
I'm staying at the AmericaInn.  I'd love to wander the town a bit. I haven't been there before; however, I've been to Cedar Rapids, IA many times.

Ladies Lunch
If any of the women are interested in meeting each other before the race,  Lisa and Jennifer have decided to meet for lunch at the Chocolate Moose on Sunday January 30th at 1:30pm.  I'll see if I can put a sign up for this lunch meeting at gear check as it seems that maybe not many of the women are reading the forum.  If men show-up, that's ok too because it's fun to meet people and chat with an unfrozen face!

2012 was a great year for the women - lots of progress! Many of us are old enough to remember when women weren't supposed to and/or weren't allowed to do these sorts of things. The Arrowhead may give us bad odds at times, but it hasn't turned us away (that I know of). If I'm not mistaken, we had a record number of women at the start (12) and finish (5). A record number got past Gateway check point. Nine got to Mel George! New women's bike record (Eszter Horanyi)! The number of women who have officially finished on foot is now doubled (was 2, now 4) - great job Alicia Hudelson and Lisa Paulos! Leah Gruhn posted the fastest bike time ever by a Minnesota women. Please feel free to add to this short list of highlights, I know I've left things out. We are making progress as a group and as individuals, AS ARE THE MEN! GREAT JOB EVERYONE!

Women specific questions-
1. What kind of seat did you ride on and would you recommend it?
2. What did you use/ do to avoid getting saddle sores & rashes?

Thank you!

1.  I will switch to a more comfortable saddle than I had last year.
2.  Chamois butt'r is your friend!!!  I recommend bringing a packet to reapply at Melgeorges.

There are 14 women registered this year!!  How about we meet up for the traditional "ladies lunch" on Sunday in I Falls?

Leah can you tell me which saddle you go with? I am having a horrible time of it. I need ultra cushion, short, narrow but split. Trying demos at the moment, along with changing my position.

What kind of cycling shorts/ pants do you recommend?

I had a bad (men's, stock) saddle last year. I have recently taken the saddle off of my mountain bike and put it on the Pugsley. That seems to be working. Last year, I just wore my standard bike shorts under Sporthill pants. I'm planning on adding wool long underwear if the temps are normal (cold). I think that the ibex cycling pants would be awesome, but my setup worked last year without having to spend money, so I'm planning on sticking with that.
